Northern Kenya Bird Watching Programme

Bird Watching, Nakuru, KenyaDay 1: A fascinating drive to northern Kenya through constantly changing landscape to Samburu stopping for lunch en-route near Mt. Kenya. The Ewaso Nyiro River, Samburu’s life support system attracts plenty of wildlife as it meanders through acacia trees . Spent the next two nights at the camp or lodge.

Day 2: Samburu is an ornithologists paradise over three hundred and fifty species of birds. Morning and afternoon game drives in Samburu concentrating along Ewaso Nyiro River.

Day 3: Return this morning to the highlands for an exciting overnight stay at a Tree Hotel. Your Tree Hotel is the ideal location to view a host of Wildlife that frequent the floodlit watering hole and saltlicks. Overnight at a Tree Hotel or Camp.

Day 4: Leaving the lush highlands, descend into the Rift Valley onto Lake Baringo for lunch. The afternoon is free for optional excursions such as a boat trip on theFlamingoe - Nakuru, Kenya Lake or a visit to Njemps Tribal Village. Overnight at a lodge or Camp.

Day 5: An early morning guided bird walk after which have a hearty breakfast. Continue to Lake Nakuru for lunch. The afternoon is spent bird watching around the lake, seasonal home of over 450 species of birds including millions of flamingos lining the shore. Overnight at a hotel or camp.

Day 6: A morning drive of great scenic beauty and contrast while crossing the Rift Valley  to the famous Masai Mara. After lunch, take an afternoon game drive with a like-hood of spotting the “Big Five” - Elephant, Rhino, Leopard, Buffalo and Lion. Overnight at lodge or camp.

Day 7: This is an exciting day of game viewing. Take an early morning and afternoon game drive through the Mara Reserve and you will see some of the most spectacular Wildlife in the Country.

Day 8: After breakfast in the Mara, return to Nairobi, arriving before lunch

Day 1: Arrival Nairobi, met and transferred to Nairobi hotel.
An afternoon guided visit to National Museum Bird Collection with bird watching at Nairobi National Museum Botanic Garden. See the  African Goshawk, Palm swift & Northern Double.
Lunch, dinner and Overnight in a Nairobi hotel

Day 2: Drive to Blue Post Inn in Thika town which is known for its twin waterfalls Chania and Thika Falls which provides a  rewarding bird watching opportunity. A chance to encounter a few coastal species that penetrate into main land following the River Tana. You could be lucky to sight the Trumpeter Hornbill, Brown Hooded Kingfisher, Zanzibar Sombre Green-bull and African Golden Weaver. Great egret, Ayres Hawk Eagle, Green sand piper, African green pigeon, Eastern bronze napped pigeon, Purple Crested Turaco, Green headed sunbird and Black cuckoo shrike

Leaving Thika, drive to the slopes of Mt Kenya, Naro Moru where mountain forest give way to valley grassland. Unique birds to this area include the Eastern double collared sunbird, Alpine swift, Black Chested snake eagle, Narinas Trogon, Scaly throated honey guide, Mountain Wagtail, White headed wood hoopoe, African Black Duck, Grey Cuckoo shrike and Yellow-bellied waxbill.

Lunch at Naro Moru River Lodge

Drive in a southerly direction to Mountain Lodge with montaine forest. Rare species likely to be seen include Green Ibis, Lesser Spotted Eagle, Harrier Hawk, Rufous Sparrow hawk, Ayre’s Hawk Eagle. Black stork, Red Fronted Parrots, Green Ibis Common snipe, Mountain Buzzard, Bronze napped pigeon Mountain white-eye, Abbots Starling, Sharpe’s Starling, Mountain Oriole and Thick-billed seedeater

Day 03: Drive to Baringo with a stop at the Nyahururu Waterfalls where there are possibilities of sighting Slander-Billed Chestnut-Winged Starlings, Slender billed starling, Rock Martin, Grey cuckoo shrike around the waterfalls.
Proceed on by road into the Great Rift Valley and onto Lake Bogoria National Park. The Reserve's herd of the rare Greater Kudu makes it unique and other game to view. The south shore of lake Bogoria has acacia-ficus woodland and to the north is a papyrus swamp. Birds unique to this area include, Congregatory of Lesser and Greater flamingo, Steppe eagle, Curlew Sand piper, Black necked grebe and Black headed Plover

Bird Watching, KenyaDay 4: Full day at Baringo, known as Kenya’s Birds Paradise with 500 species of birds having been recorded. Explore this area with field birding around Lake Baringo, its environs, the Cliffs and the bushes. There are possibilities to see rare species like, Cape Eagle Owl, Tinkling Cisticola White-faced Scops Owl, Jackson’s Hornbill, Hemprich’s Hornbill, Brown-Tailed Rock Chat, Nothern Red Bishop, Northern Masked Weaver and White Billed Buffalo Weaver, Olivaceous Warbler, Northern brownbul, Jackson's golden backed weaver, Little weaver, Brown Tailed Rock Chat, Goliath heron, Northern Shoveller, White faced scops owl, Verreouxs eagle owl, Bristle crowned starling, Senegal Thicknee, Pygmy falcon, Blue cheecked bee-eater

Day 5: Drive to Kakamega forest through Eldoret. Kakamega forest is the only rain forest in Kenya and the fauna is rich and unusual in its composition. Two globally threatened species reside here, Chapins Flycatcher and Turners Eremomela. The avifauna is unique not only in Kenya but also in Africa. Kakamega Forest holds large populations of Black and white colobus and Red tailed monkeys among others.

Day 6: Full day at the eastern most extension of the great tropical rain forest which streches from West Africa. This forest is renowned for its uniqueness and richness in species, Turners Eremomela, Black billed Turaco, Great blue turaco, Cameroon Sombre Green bull, Little grey Green bull, Yellow Bellied Wattle eye, Purple-throated cuckoo, Hairy Breasted Barbet, Grey breasted illadopsis, African Grey Parrot, Square tailed drongo and Chapins Flycatcher
Dinner and Overnight: Rondo Retreat Center.

Day 7: Drive to the shores Lake Victoria, the Dunga Swamp - one of the most reliable sites in Kenya for the scarce and threatened papyrus yellow warbler. Papyrus Gonolek, Swamp fly catcher, Yellow backed weaver, Jacksons golden backed weaver, Red chested sunbird, Sedge warbler, Carruthers's Cisticola, Southern red bishop, Northern brown throated weaver, Greater swamp warbler.
Leave for Lake Nakuru, a shallow and strongly alkaline lake, with surrounding acacia woodland & grassland. Firstly gazetted as a bird sanctuary. The lake is internationally famous for its populations of lesser flamingo, numbers can reach 1.5 million at times, though drastic and unpredictable fluctuations occur. It is a very Bird Watching, Kenyaimportant feeding site for the lesser flamingo.

Day 8: Morning game game drive at Lake Nakuru, coloured with a shimmering flamingo pink from thousands of the beautiful birds lining its shores. Nakuru National Park which is, known for its bird life ? as thousands of flamingos make this lake their home, among hundreds of other Species unique to this area which include, White winged Black Tern, Hilderbrants Francolin, African fish eagle, Steppe eagle, Grey crested Helmet Shrike, Red-capped lark, Spotted Crake. Wildlife is also in abundance here. Lake Nakuru National Park has been made into one of Kenya's rhino sanctuary.
Lunch at Sarova Lion Hill Lodge
Depart for Lake Naivasha, the only fresh water rift valley lake in Kenya. It’s unique in that its freshness is maintained by a combination of underground out flow and sedimentation of salts. The lake supports a diverse water-bird community, with more than 80 species recorded regularly. It is a significant site for Red knobbed coots, African spoonbill and little grebes depending on water levels
Dinner and Overnight: Lake Naivasha Country Club.

Day 9: Full day at the Lake Naivasha Region with bird walks around the Club grounds and a visit to the Elsa Mere. Notable birds unique to this area include, Gardwall, Spotted Red Shank, Black Tailed Godwit, Great white egret, Black Headed Gull, Purple Swamp Hen and Mottled swift.

Day 10: Drive across acres of wheat and barley to Masai Mara. The Masai Mara Game Reserve, is regarded as the most magnificent natural theatre in the world. Set in the heart of Africa’s Great Plains, the Masai Mara boasts 1,672 square kilometers of unspoiled wilderness. It is home to the highest concentration of animals and birds anywhere on the continent.
Dinner and Overnight: Sarova Mara Camp.

Day 11&12: Two full days in the Masai, the extensive grasslands are a strong hold to the threatened, migratory Corncrake and the near threatened Jackson's widowbird. The bush and woodlands around the reserve also hold some unique bird species, more than 500 bird species have been recorded in the Mara, including 12 species of cisticola and birds of prey. Large numbers of palaerctic migrants winter in the area including Caspian plovers and white storks.

Other local and unusual birds in the Mara include Rock Cisticola, Rufous Bellied Heron, Denhams Bustard, Black Coucal, Red Tailed chat, Pale Wren Warbler, Tabora Cisticola, Yellow Bellied Hyliota, Green-capped Eremomela and Magpie Shrike.

Day 12: Depart for Nairobi with picnic lunch en route
Check-in to day room at Landmark
Farewell dinner at The Carnivore Restaurant.
Transfer to airport for International Departure flights.
